To celebrate a decade of Alistair McDowell’s riveting stage performance, Captain Amazing, delighting theatre audiences, the Southwark Playhouse has announced that it has become the new home for the show.

The expression “Not all heroes wear capes” is markedly accurate regarding being a parent and handling the challenges thrown at you. If you haven’t heard what Captain Amazing is or want to learn more about the show, Official London Theatre has you covered.

What is Captain Amazing About?

Anybody who’s had a child and becomes a father can attest to the difficulty involved and how it’s all worth it. Sacrifices need to be made, and you’ll feel like a superhero for achieving all you do.

Alistair McDowell’s original one-person show played in northern England and Scotland but was signed to a national tour that propelled his story into the spotlight; it has now found a West End home for its tenth anniversary.

Problems occur in the life of a new father, and desperate situations must be dealt with. However, how can a man overcome issues when so many others would struggle? The perseverance and persistence of the lead character are inspiring. This funny yet touching show has everything you need to feel alive with emotion in the theatre.

Along the South Bank, between Borough and Elephant & Castle stations, the Southwark Playhouse waits for you to buy tickets and steps through its doors. Theatre Tokens make an excellent gift for a loved one, so why not consider these to give somebody else the beauty of live theatre?

McDowell, Weinman, and Judd are the Dream Team

McDowell has long been hailed as a trailblazer in creating contemporary stage shows ever since his much-acclaimed Brilliant Adventures captivated his audience with his zany time-travel plot set in Middlesbrough.

However, Captain Amazing has a run time of an hour and ten minutes, with Mark Weinman portraying the title character, who initially played the role when the production first hit the stage. Weinman had this to say about playing Captain Amazing again: “I’m absolutely delighted to be able to play Captain Amazing one more time – not least because I’m now closer to the titular character’s age, and I don’t have to play up any more! There’s not many chances for an actor to go back to a role ten years on, and it’s a real privilege to get to speak Ali’s words again. What a treat to share this story in a new version, which brings it up to date for new audiences.” Clive Judd will once again be directing the performance.
