Role-Playing Games (RPGs) include various subgenres which offer different gaming experiences. There’s a vast array of RPGs available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and other platforms, and you might wonder which games are the most beginner friendly. Here are some popular types of RPGs, and some recommendations for beginner gamers.
Turn-based RPGs
Players take turns to perform actions like attacking or using items. Combat is often strategic, requiring thoughtful planning. Some games ranked among the best turn based RPGs include Final Fantasy VII and Pokémon Red/Blue.
Turn-based RPGs can be a good option for beginners. The slower pace allows newcomers to understand the mechanics without feeling overwhelmed, as well as time to enjoy the game’s story.
Action RPGs
These games combine RPG elements with real-time combat, where timing and reflexes are crucial. Stories and immersive worlds are often important aspects. Some classic examples include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Dark Souls.
Are they suited to beginners? Somewhat. While they offer engaging gameplay, the real-time combat can be challenging for those new to the genre.
Tactical RPGs
Tactical RPGs involve grid-based combat and require positioning and strategy. These games are a blend of traditional RPGs and strategy games, and include the Fire Emblem and XCOM series.
Are they for beginners? Maybe. The learning curve is steeper, but those who like strategy games may find them enjoyable.
Japanese RPGs (JRPGs)
These are RPGs developed in Japan. JRPGs are known for their strong narratives, distinct art styles, and character-driven stories. An early example was Spy Daisakusen, which was based on Mission: Impossible. More recent games include Persona 5 and Chrono Trigger. JRPGs often feature turn-based combat.
Many of these games are beginner-friendly due to their focus on story and character development.
Western RPGs
These can be characterized by open-world exploration, player choice, and complex narratives. Western RPGs often allow for a high degree of character customization. Popular games include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Mass Effect series.
The freedom and flexible difficulty settings make these games accessible for beginners.
MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online RPGs)
These are RPGs where thousands of players interact in an online world, often focusing on quests, raids, and social interaction. Games like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV are hugely popular.
But are they playable for beginners? To a degree. Some MMORPGs may be overwhelming due to the vast amount of content and social aspects, but these games are rewarding with commitment. There are some free MMORPG games available.
Roguelike RPGs
Roguelike RPGs often feature levels and maps that are generated by algorithms (rather than by human developers), permadeath, and turn-based gameplay. They’re usually difficult but rewarding. Hades and Dead Cells are among the best-reviewed roguelike RPGs.
Are they good for beginners? Not usually. The difficulty and permadeath mechanics can be harsh for new players.
Dungeon Crawlers
These games allow you to explore dungeons and fight enemies. Progress often comes with upgrading your character’s gear. The Diablo series and Torchlight are popular examples. Hades could also be included in this category. There is a fair bit of crossover with many RPG sub-genres. Enter the Gungeon is another well-reviewed dungeon crawler.
Beginner-friendly? Quite often – many of these games offer straightforward gameplay.
So which RPGs are best for beginners?
Turn-based RPGs are typically the most accessible due to their focus on story and friendly pace. Western RPGs and Japanese RPGs are also good starting points.
If you’re signed up to a game subscription service, or would prefer to try some free online games, you can play a few RPGs and get a feel for what type of game you most enjoy.
